The dinner jacket, or as known in the U.S. the tuxedo, has been introduced in the late nineteenth century. With the increasing popularity of outdoor activities among the British nobility, the dinner jacket meant an ease back on formality when smoking a cigar on country house weekends.

By 1900 in England, the dinner jacket was being worn with a bow tie, while in the U.S. the tuxedo was more a matter of experimentation of different styles and materials. The white “Tux” has been created at this time also. The dinner jacket became the formal wear of theatres and dinner parties.

The dinner suit reflects individuality with the frame of formality. A coloured bowtie or waistcoat can make a difference by worn with your outfit. The waistcoat is optional when wearing a tuxedo. In aspects of colour, black is not only traditional but has a slimming effect. While the white dinner jacket can be worn for hot weather, and can be slightly longer and easier fitting than the black jacket. It functions best at open air social gatherings such as summer garden parties or cruises.

We offer many variations of specialty fabrics for Black Tie Garments. Have a look at our Fabric guide to get an impression.
