A plain suit is often overlooked and last on the list of “wants” but should be your first of “needs”.  This Birkdale Collection puts life into the plain colour suit. From bold to versatile, you will not find a more comprehensive offering in a solid range.

Offered here in two weights. 400g Twill Weave is a strong and forgiving ideal for sharp tailoring and after 135 years still remains one of the most popular weaves. 280g Venetian Weave is hard-wearing but at the same time self-ventilating to keep the wearer cool.

Both durable weaves make this range an ideal selection for trousers and coats. Save those work suits by pairing a couple of trousers with them. Splitting the suit up rather than having multiple matching trousers for a single jacket will give you more looks and widen your wardrobe range.

Harris Tweed
Handwoven in Scotland

Across the waters from Scotland, beyond the Isle of Skye lies the barren, rocky Isle of Harris. Over one hundred and fifty years ago, the islanders created a unique cloth, a tweed entirely woven by hand that was to become famous, known simply as it is today as ‘Harris Tweed’.

In 1906, The Kenneth Mackenzie Mill, the successor to the Lewis Wool Mills company, was established. Today Kenneth Mackenzie Mill produces unique designs which is updated annually. For the first time a cut length program is offered through Huddersfield Cloth. Every length will come with the ‘Orb’ trademark fabric label of authenticity.

Every 3 metres of cloth is inspected and approved before being stamped by hand with the Orb trademark under this unique Act, policed by the Harris Tweed Authority, who monitors all fabric on a daily basis. It is amazing to think in this mechanised and mass produced world, Harris Tweed is still woven by hand on the Western Isles of Scotland.

Howick.png

Howick
Cert 19.5 Micron

The fine New Zealand Merino worsted yarn used in Howick has given this cloth an even more refined handle whilst retaining the robust wearability for which the quality has become known. Subtle, intricate weave structures cleverly combined with custom colours and new exciting designs stay true to English style and heritage, easily allowing the wearer to incorporate these designs into their everyday wardrobe.

The quality of New Zealand’s raw materials is one of the most important reasons why Huddersfield Cloth’s fabrics are continually evolving and improving.  Howick is no exception to this.

The Howick Collection has very quickly established itself as a modern day classic and rightly deserves to take its place in any man’s wardrobe.

Linnen and Cotton.jpg

Linen & Cotton
280 - 310 Grams / 9.8 - 10.9 Ounces

Linen and Cotton - the ‘Cool’ Choices for Tailoring

Whilst a crisp, high twist wool in plain weave is often the first choice when considering tailoring for hot summer days, Huddersfield Cloth’s line and cotton range is no less suitable and an often forgotten, yet better option for an elegant jacket or stylish pair of trousers.

Linen’s prime appeal is its coolness to the touch - much more than wool and a little more than cotton.  Linen is also breathable due to the thick linen fibres which make for a more ‘open’ and breathable weave structure. Huddersfield Cloth’s linen exemplifies these characteristics.

Many people are put off linen because it wrinkles, but this only adds to linen’s appeal because it makes the fabric less formal.  The long linen fibres have natural imperfections along their length which can show up as ‘slubs’ in the cloth. Again this only adds to the appeal of linen - aficionados of tweed in Winter are often drawn to the slubby look of linen in Summer.

Our cotton on the other hand is soft and casual, shaping itself to the body, wrinkling less than linen. It doesn’t necessarily need to be a Summer material only - partner our cotton with knitwear and it can be just as much at home in Winter as it is in Summer.

Let your imagination run wild and test your tailor’s limits with this range. Safari jackets, jean cut trousers, trench coats... the list goes on. Don’t forget to try a heavier weight cotton thread; you will be amazed at the difference it makes. We recommend an 80s thread for topstitching details.

London Shrunk.jpg

London Shrunk
280 Grams / 100% Merino Wool

‘London Shrunk’ by Huddersfield Cloth - the Ultimate in Fabric Handle, Drape and Tailorability

Woven fabric straight from the loom is both rough to the touch and greasy due to the oils used during the spinning process which converts the wool fibre into yarn - this loom state fabric is quite literally ‘raw’

It is the skill of the finisher which transforms the raw, greasy wool fabric into something spectacular, a modern-day alchemy blending 4 key elements - Fibre, Yarn, Weave Structure and Finish.

Washing the fabric in natural soap and in wood-lined scouring machines removes the oils, grease and dirt from the fabric. The craftspeople at our finisher, W.T. Johnson, with their years of experience, know instinctively how long to scour the fabric, how much soap to use and what the temperature of the soft, Yorkshire water, drawn from the company’s own well, needs to be to produce the best results.

Getting this part of the finishing process right is the key to unlocking all subsequent processes which involve steaming and ‘setting’, or stabilising the fabric.

But what exactly differentiates ‘London Shrunk’ cloth from other fabric finishes and why ‘London Shrunk’ and not ‘Huddersfield Shrunk’ ?

Shrinking fabric has always been the best way of making cloth stable and allowing tailors to go on and produce their very best work. W.T Johnson have taken and refined this process allowing Huddersfield Cloth to offer the finest suiting of its type. By adapting and modernising techniques originally used by the Shrinking Houses in London in the 50’s, Johnson dampen and shrink the fabric, allowing it to relax to its natural width, ensuring it drapes with great fluidity and elevating the handle to a completely different level.

London shrinking enhances the handle and drape of the fabric, allowing the tailor to work their own particular magic and to cut, sew, steam and press without altering the fabric’s condition.

Chosen by tailors to make garments for those who demand the best, from Presidents to Royalty worldwide.
